Pool Pumps

Single speed pump? Two-speed pump? Multi-speed pump? The days of just "taking one out and putting one in" are over. There are many things to consider when looking to replace your main filter pump or even an auxiliary pump.

Since January 1, 2008, main pool filter pump replacements with a "total horsepower" of one or larger must be two-speed or variable-speed. "Total Horsepower" is a mathematical rating. "Pump HP" multiplied by the "Service Factor" gives Total Horsepower. (HP times SF = Total HP). Don't think that because your pump is a 3/4 horsepower pump that it obviously complies with this new requirement. You must take the service factor into consideration. The 2 speed pump allows for your filter pump to run on a lower speed for the majority of it's filtering time, and moving to a second speed when needed, such as when your pool sweep motor is running , you want to turn on your pool or spa heater, or if your solar system is ready to gather heat from the sun.

Even better than that, though, are the newest generation of multi-speed pumps that can be programmed to run at various speeds depending on the needs of your system at any given time. While the initial investment is a little larger, the payback in your electrical bill can be significant, often paying for itself within the first year - after that the money goes back in your pocket!

Check out the Pentair web site. With just a few pieces of information about your specific situation, you can readily see how much money you can be saving.
